Specialized Ventilator Unit/p>
Ventilator-dependent patients who are admitted to Keser have some very strong factors working on their behalf. Keser has been caring for people who cannot breathe independently for almost ten years. It began when one of our long time residents was hospitalized and while in the hospital was placed on a respirator. It was heartbreaking for him and his family to think that he would have to be placed elsewhere because Keser did not treat ventilator-dependent patients at that time. It was to accommodate him and his family that Keser first began to care for such residents and since then many people have benefited from that decision.
Many of our residents have been successfully weaned from the respirator. This is a gradual process, that involves removing the respirator for half an hour at a time and increasing the interval off the machine while closely monitoring the resident’s safe breathing. Naturally the enhancement of the quality of life of a person no longer connected to machines cannot be overstated. Hospitals also try to wean patients, but if the attempt does not meet with immediate success, it is not continued. At Keser, any resident who seems likely to have a chance at successful weaning is given as much time and as many chances to try as needed.
