Expanded Rehab Program At Keser/p>
The Rehabilitation Department at Keser continues to grow and expand. While the goal of this department has always been to develop the highest level of functional independence in the activities of daily living for all of our residents, the increased professional staffing allows them to do more with and for each resident who has the capacity to improve.
Residents with recent fractures or strokes are obvious candidates for therapy, but residents who have become reconditioned can also benefit greatly from therapy. All residents are screened upon admission to see if they can benefit from physical or occupational therapy. On a continuing basis, the doctors and nurses monitor each resident to see if there is an observed potential to increase independence in which case the resident is referred for a reevaluation for inclusion in therapy programs. Physical Therapy focuses on training and retraining the body and mind to work together to perform the intricate task of safe walking that most of us take for granted. Occupational Therapy specializes in increasing each resident’s performance of activities of daily living such as feeding, dressing, and washing the face and upper body.
The Physical and Occupational Therapists work closely with the social workers, particularly when it appears that a resident is progressing so well that a return to community living is an imminent reality. Speech Therapy helps stroke victims and others with impaired speech and swallowing to regain normal functions in these areas. Indeed, an impressive number of people who have come to Keser for short-term restorative care, have successfully and safely made the transition back to living at home.
